Resetting the Vagus Nerve By Dr Luke Schmelzle DC of Tail of the Sun

The internet is ablaze with articles and videos about the vagus nerve, the issues involved, and lots of suggestions on how to “reset” it. Because the vagus nerve is heavily involved with chronic stress and inflammation, this is a worthy topic to learn about. The Polyvagal Theory was proposed and developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, Director of the Brain-Body Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Porges is a medical doctor and researcher who has gained renown for introducing this topic to the public. So, let’s dive in.

Why Resetting the Vagus Nerve Matters

The Vagus nerve is a cranial nerve, focused upon the parasympathetic tone regulation to some of our most important organs. The nervous system regulates essential body functions. When we feel in danger, the “Fight, flight, freeze” response kicks in to keep us safe. Moment by moment, this is a very effective driver, and we need it. However, if this system gets “stuck,” we may find ourselves not responding well to stress. The vagus nerve can lose its proper tone and fall into a chronic state where harmony is lost. We can show symptoms of dysfunction in our breathing, sleep, mental clarity, concentration, digestion, and social connections.

Many patients come to me with an understanding of PTSD, polyvagal theory, and a deep desire to make a shift. The harmful effects of a nervous system out of balance slowly creeps in, and can become deeply entrenched. It is important to have some insights into these topics. More importantly, we need tools to shift us.

Benefits of Nervous System Regulation

Improved response to stress. We can respond better to difficult situations and move past them, instead of reacting and getting “stuck” in them.

Ability to access higher learning and cognition. We can become attuned to and more in control of emotions, with greater resilience to move through temporary setbacks with more flexibility and ease.

More social connections and deeper relationships. When our nervous system is operating effectively, we can readily activate the part of our brain that allows us to be more social, affectionate, and connected. It paves the way for deeper, more meaningful relationships.

Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)

I have recently attained a new level of certification as a Safe and Sound Protocol provider. I have new tools to help balance the nervous system. This listening therapy was created in conjunction with Dr. Porges, and the decades of scientific research show it to be a very powerful tool for resetting the nervous system.

How It Works

person relaxed while listening

The music of SSP has been specifically filtered to highlight frequencies of sound that typically make us feel safe.  It focuses upon frequencies like talking, laughter, music, water flowing, etc. The playlists have been engineered to help the vagus nerve and the entire central nervous system to return to a balanced state. Most of the listening sessions are available from the comfort of your own home. You can schedule an appointment with me to explore this further.

Who Might Benefit

SSP is beneficial for children and adults who experience any of the following:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Hypersensitivity to sound, touch, smell, taste, etc.
  • Neurodevelopmental differences, such as autism, hyperactivity and attention
  • Learning difficulties
  • Auditory and other sensory processing differences
  • Trauma history
  • Sleep issues
  • Digestive problems
  • Neurological changes
  • Other challenges related to autonomic dysfunction, such as eating difficulties, gut health, and more

“I am extremely thankful for the SSP and the reduction in depression, anxiety, and intrusive thoughts it has given me. I am able to enjoy life again and experience calmness. I have motivation to change my lifestyle, and I’m even optimistic about the future.” Satisfied client
